RILEY B. McCORKELL

The eleventh child born to George Riley McCorkell was RILEY BURTON McCORKELL, who was born on 26 May 1887, in Stiltson, near Scammon, Kansas. George McCorkell's third marriage was to Lillias J. (Burton) Ketchum in 1883 and he already had nine children that were the issue of his first two marriages but only eight had survived by 1887. Riley was the second son of his father's third marriage.

Riley's father, George R. McCorkle/McCorkell, an Indiana Civil War soldier, had been born in Orange County, Indiana and had migrated to Kansas after the Civil War. Riley's grandfather, Andrew Charles McCorkle (1832) was born in Kentucky and later migrated to Orange County, Indiana after he was married. Riley's great-grandfather was a Revolutionary War veteran from Augusta County, Virginia and served in Captain Buchanan's company. (Reference chapter 6 for a major review of the early McCorkle history.) Needless to say, the McCorkle/McCorkell family descends from early American pioneers and should be proud of their heritage.

Riley Burton McCorkell grew up on a farm in rural southeastern Kansas and began his early education in the Scammon public schools. Most of his early developmental years were spent on his father's farm with many brothers and sisters. His mother had three daughters and a stepson from her first marriage and his father had several older children from his earlier marriages -- possibly five or six. Even though all the siblings were the issue of several marriages, they all pulled together and helped each other. The McCorkell family had several outstanding traits, two of which were their athletic and musical abilities. All could sing, several played various musical instruments and a few could play more than one instrument.

In 1896, when Riley was nine years of age, his family moved to nearby Joplin, Missouri to live on Chestnut Street. He no doubt continued his education in the Joplin public school system. Riley's father was progressing into his retirements years and would have been sixty-four years old in 1896. George's sons applied their farming knowledge towards various jobs in Seneca as they grew into manhood.

RILEY B. McCORKELL married LAURA MAY LANKFORD on 27 May 1908, at her home and officiated by Reverend Shaffer. Riley and Laura lived in Miami, Oklahoma -- an eastern corner of Oklahoma, near Seneca and Joplin, Missouri. Riley and Laura McCorkell had five children: BURTON L. (1909), BEATRICE L. (1911), GEORGE T. (1912), BONNIE M. (1919) and JACK R. (1926).

Riley's father passed away in 1910 and was buried in Joplin, Missouri. A few years after, his mother went to southern California to visit her oldest daughter and decided to remain in Arlington. Several members of the family had already migrated westward and Lillie McCorkell encouraged the rest to migrate also. As it turned out, Riley was the only son of GEORGE RILEY McCORKELL who didn't migrate to Arlington, Riverside County, California. His brother John migrated but returned to nearby Seneca, Missouri when he discovered he had tuberculosis. In addition to John's descendants, Riley and Laura left many descendants in the general Miami, Oklahoma area. Laura McCorkell passed away in 1963 and Riley B. McCorkell passed away in 1967. Both are buried in the Ottawa Indian Cemetery

EARLY McCORKLES

The McCorkell family have lived in and around the 'greater Joplin area' for over a hundred years (a 50 mile radius of Joplin includes portions of three states: Missouri, Oklahoma and Kansas). The patriarch of this branch, George Riley McCorkle/McCorkell (1830-1910) was originally from Orange County, Indiana and a 5th generation American descendant. This branch of the McCorkle/McCorkell family had ancestors who fought in the American Revolution and the War of the Rebellion. Earlier McCORKLE/McCORKELL descendants are believed to have been: [possibly JAMES-1 (1694, Scotland) or WILLIAM-1 (ca 1696, Scotland), possibly SAMUEL-2 (ca late 1720's, Scotland?), SAMUEL-3 (1759, Augusta Co., VA), ANDREW CHARLES-4 (ca 1789, Green Co., KY), GEORGE RILEY-5 (1832, Orange Co., IN) and RILEY BURTON-6 (1884, Cherokee Co., KS)].

George was born 3 May 1832 in Orangeville, Orange County, Indiana, a son of ANDREW CHARLES McCORKLE-4 (a son of Revolutionary War soldier, ANDREW McCORKLE-3, who served 1777-1881 in the Augusta Co., Militia, Virginia & in Capt. Patrick Buchanan's company under Gen. Morgan) and MARY ("Polly") ANNA CRABTREE, who died before 1837. Andrew then remarried CHARLOTTE PITTS on 28 Dec 1837. Sometime between 1837 and 1849, Andrew Charles McCorkle passed away, leaving his second wife and approximately seven children. Charlotte McCorkle began placing her stepchildren into apprenticeships which guaranteed some education, a home and gave them a new start in life at the age of twenty-one. In ca 1851, Charlotte remarried to Mr. Westmoreland and tried to encourage the McCorkle children to return to her new home.

GEORGE RILEY McCORKLE/McCORKELL-5 married MARIA DAUGHERTY, who died in 1855. He remarried to JANE O. GIFFORD and served in the Civil War (Pvt., Co. C, 146th Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry). After his honorable discharge, he returned to Orangeville, Indiana. During the post-Civil War era, he apparently allowed his surname to evolve from the original 'McCORKLE' spelling to that of 'McCORKELL.' He migrated to Cherokee County, Kansas before 1876. Mrs. Lillias J. (Burton) Ketchum, widow of Asa C. Ketchum, remarried George in Cherokee, Crawford County, Kansas in 1883. It was her second marriage and George's third marriage. In 1896, he moved his family from the Kansas farm to Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri. Most of his surviving children married and migrated westward accept for John Franklin McCorkell (1884) who settled in Seneca, Newton County, Missouri and Riley Burton McCorkell (1886) who settled in nearby Miami, Ottawa County, Oklahoma.

RILEY BURTON McCORKELL-6, born 26 May 1886 near Scammon, Kansas, was the son of George Riley and Lillias J. (Burton) McCorkell. Riley B. McCorkell grew up in rural Scammon, Kansas, learned farming and other required skills, such as being an outstanding carpenter and a water well driller. On 28 May 1908, Riley was living in Seneca, Missouri when he married LAURA MAY LANKFORD, also of Seneca. Minister Isaac Shaffer, a minister of the Gospel, married them at the Lankford family home in Seneca, Missouri. "Riley was mostly a farmer and an excellent carpenter. He was very socially oriented and was always entertaining the younger ones. He was always helping his friends build something because in those days, each one helped the other. I can remember when my father and three other men got together and built a barn for each other. One commented that he had never seen a man cut a rafter the first time as accurately as Riley could." DISCUSSION

RILEY BURTON McCORKELL (1887) was the eleventh child born to his father, George Riley McCorkell (1832-1910) in his third marriage, which was to widow Lillias Jacinth (Burton) Ketchum in 1883. George had nine children from his first two marriages and Riley was the second son of his third marriage. In addition, his new wife also had three Ketchum daughters and one Ketchum stepson. Lillie had been living with her parents after her first husband's death in 1881 and in 1882, her father passed away in McCune, Kansas. When George married his third wife, he also took on all of her dependents, including her mother, Elizabeth Burton. Altogether they had one large happy family.

Riley is the sixth generation of this branch of American McCorkles/McCorkells. The name of the immigrant still remains to be validated, but various researchers have narrowed it down to either JAMES McCORKLE-1 (1694) or WILLIAM McCORKLE-1 (ca late 1690's). The McCorkle migrated from Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky and Indiana. Riley's great-grandfather served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War and his father served in the Civil War. At some point, either before or after the Civil War, George R. McCorkle allowed the spelling of his surname to finally evolve into 'McCorkell.'

Riley was born and raised on the farm in Stiltson, near Scammon, Crawford County, Kansas. He attended the nearby public schools in the mining town of Scammon until the age of nine, when the family moved to Joplin, Missouri. Presumably George moved his family to town, as he was in his sixties -- his retirement years. Riley most likely continued his formal education in the Joplin public schools. The year after his brother John got married and at the age of twenty-one, Riley married Laura Lankford in 1908, in Seneca, Missouri. Riley was mostly a farmer but he was an excellent carpenter and participated in various social work events, such as barn-raisings. Riley was known for quickly 'eye-balling' the exact length of a rafter and then cutting it rapidly so it would fit the first time. Little is known about Riley's early athletics, but he later co-managed a Seneca merchant's baseball team and several of his sons were players.

Riley and Laura first lived in Seneca but eventually moved to nearby Miami, Oklahoma. They had five children who were: Burt (1909), Beatrice (1911), George (1912), Bonnie (1919) and Jack 1926). Their children attended the local schools, grew up and eventually married. All of Riley's children remained in the local Miami area. Laura (Lankford) McCorkell passed away in 1963 and Riley B. McCorkell passed away in 1967. They are both buried in the Ottawa Indian Cemetery. Bonnie Stoner later commented that one didn't have to be an Indian to be buried in the local cemetery.

Bonnie (McCorkell) Stoner recalled that sometime after George died, Lillias and Claude McCorkell had moved down to Nina, Arkansas. Lillie was living on a small pension and kept writing to Riley to bring his wife and three kids down to live. They finally went down around 1912-13 and saw that they were living very frugally and "were almost starved out." Evidently Lillias was a wrather forceful woman, so "Riley waited until she was gone one day before he and his family left" for the Seneca/Miami area.

SUMMARY

Riley Burton McCorkell was the eleventh child born to his father, George Riley McCorkell and his third wife, Lillias J. Ketchum. Riley descends from a long line of McCorkles/McCorkells, some of whom served in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. He was born on 26 May 1887, in Stiltson, near Scammon, Crawford County, Kansas. He lived the first nine years of his life on his father's farm and attended the public schools in nearby Scammon, Kansas. They next moved to town in Joplin, Missouri where he completed his education. At the age of twenty-one, Riley married Laura May Lankford at her home in Seneca, Missouri on 27 May 1908. After living in Seneca a few years, they settled in nearby Miami, Oklahoma. Riley was basically a farmer but he also excelled as a skilled carpenter and frequently participated in old fashioned barn-raisings. He was also interested in sports and once co-managed a merchant's baseball team in Seneca. He and Laura had five children (Burt, Beatrice, George, Bonnie and Jack) and taught them sound ethics and Christian values. Their children grew up, married and mostly remained in the local area. In 1993, Miami, Oklahoma still has a lot of McCorkell descendants.
