CLAUDE E. McCORKELL

The last son and fourteenth child born to George Riley McCorkell (1830) was CLAUDE ERIC McCORKELL on 29 December 1892 at Stiltson, near Scammon, Kansas. His mother, Lillias Jacinth (Burton), married his father in 1883 after the 1881 death of her first husband (Asa C. Ketchum) and became George's third wife. Even though Claude had many McCorkell children born before him, only the youngest and unmarried siblings were still in the home. In addition to these McCorkell half-siblings (poss Jennie (1868) & Gifford (ca 1872)), Claude also had four McCorkell full-siblings (John, Riley, Susan & Katie), three Ketchum half-siblings (Minnie (1875), Lizzie (1877) & Hester (1880)) and a Ketchum step-brother, Harry (1870). Claude also gained a new grandmother in his father's third marriage, as widow Elizabeth Tarr Burton remained with her daughter Lillias. In retrospect, the third marriage was more like a corporate merger and George McCorkell proudly provided for all. And Claude was not the last child to be born. George's fifteenth and last child was Anna Opal Seal McCorkell, who was born on 5 October 1894, but sadly passed away in January, 1894, She only lived three months and ten days. She was buried in the local Lune Elm Cemetery in Scammon, Kansas.

Claude McCorkell was raised on his father's farm near Scammon, until 1896 when they moved to Joplin, Missouri. He then grew up in a town environment and attended the Joplin schools. His father passed away in 1910 and a few years later, Claude had traveled to Riverside, California where he presumably joined the Army during World War I. His musical ability was excellent so it's not surprising that he was in the band. After he was honorably discharged from the Army, he returned to Southern California and went into produce retail sales. He met a young girl named ISADORA ISABELLA ALVAREZ-SANCHEZ, who was called LAURA and married her before 1919. They began raising a family of six children and later on, they returned to Corona and began a small gardening products business.

Claude and Laura raised their family in Corona and were proud of their children's academic and athletic achievements. All the McCorkell children excelled in various sports. Finally after a series of strokes, Laura McCorkell passed away in 1945. Claude eventually remarried several times and then passed away in 1976. Both are buried in Olivewood Cemetery in Riverside, Calif.

EARLY HISTORY

CLAUDE ERIC McCORKELL was born on 29 December 1892, in Stiltson, Kansas to George Riley McCorkell and Lillias J. Burton-Ketchum. He was George's fourteenth McCorkell child and an issue of his father's third marriage.

Claude McCorkell's earliest memories were probably of the family farm in southeastern Kansas, where he lived for approximately four years until his father moved the family to nearby Joplin, Missouri in 1896. Not much is known about Claude's early life. He most likely began his formal education in the Joplin School District, where completed most, if not all of his education. His closest brother had married in 1907 and 1908 and lived in nearby Seneca. He probably learned farming techniques while working full and part time jobs -- possibly even with various family members. He was eighteen years old when his father passed away in March, 1910. His parents had just purchased a new Joplin home near Routes 66 and 71 when his father passed away. The funeral was held at home and George R. McCorkell was buried nearby in the old Baptist Cemetery.

Claude's life as a teenager was probably one of constant family change. Most of his older brothers and sisters had married and several had migrated westward to the Pacific Northwest (Reno, Nevada & near Sacramento, Calif.) and Southwest (San Diego & Riverside, Calif.) and some had passed away. Times were probably financially difficult, as the country had a major recession in 1907 and even though his father was in retirement, things had to have worsened after his death. Claude and his mother had moved down to Nina, Arkansas sometime around ca 1912. Bonnie Stoner, Riley McCorkell's daughter, remembers the story her father told about moving down there after being repeatedly encouraged by his mother Lillias. It was a small place and evidently didn't have good earth for farming. Riley returned with his family to the Seneca area at the first opportunity.

The McCorkell musical trait seemed to have been very strong in Claude. He could play many musical instruments and could easily "play-by-ear" any tune he had recently heard. This musical talent was most evident when he joined the Army during World War I. He was the fifth man of a horse-drawn artillery piece & a member of the army band. He was in the band and was reported to have been able to play every instrument. Claude entertained many family members at various "get-togethers" throughout his life.

At some point (ca 1914-15?), possibly before WWI, Claude McCorkell migrated westward to Southern California. Jessie (McCorkell) Brott-Marshall, one of Claude's daughters, remembers hearing that Claude had gone to California and that his mother had gone to check up on him. It was on this trip that Lillie McCorkell decided to remain in Riverside and encouraged the few remaining family members to join them. Possibly Jerome and Gifford were nearby around 1915 and Minnie was then living near San Diego before relocating to Arlington, Riverside County in 1917. Around this time, Sam McCorkell migrated from Arizona to Southern California and settled in Ontario. In any event, the family began to localize around the Riverside area, but a few also remained near Sacramento.

Lillie McCorkell enjoyed her remaining years in the Riverside area and lived with her daughter, Minnie (Ketchum) Bobo. She became ill and was tended by various sons and daughters. Finally LILLIAS JACINTH (BURTON) McCORKELL passed away in 1924 and was buried in the family cemetery at Olivewood, Riverside, Calif.

CLAUDE E. McCORKELL me LAURA ALVAREZ (ISADORA ISABELLA ALVAREZ-SANCHEZ), a pretty young Mexican girl, fell in love and married her in 1918. They settled down in the Compton/Downey area of Los Angeles and began raising their family. Claude had a produce stall in a commercial building and was successfully selling his products in the 'market area' of down-town Los Angeles area until the 1929 crash. He later relocated to Corona (near Riverside) and was owner/operator of a gardening products business. Claude and Laura's six children were: JESSIE LILLIAS (1919), JOHN LAWRENCE (1921), CLAUDE ERIC (1924), SAMUEL GIFFORD (1926), KATHERINE LOLITA (1928) and ROBERT EALULIO (1937). Laura began experiencing several strokes and convalesced for a number of years before passing away in 1945. Claude eventually remarried several times and enjoyed his retirement years. Claude passed away in 1976 and was buried in Olivewood Cemetery, Riverside, California.

The Corona-branch of the McCorkell family has turned out to one of the most prolific of the extended family and and are all strong supporters and attendees of the west coast annual McCorkell Family Picnic. Claude's descendants have assumed responsibility for maintaining the name-and-address file, selecting the annual picnic site and notifying family members, but mostly our thanks goes to Jessie's daughter, Paula Bisera. She continues to do an outstanding job and we all appreciate her organizational skills.

FAMILY TRADITION

"CLAUD ERIC McCORKELL married LAURA ALVEREZ in 1918 while he was still in the Army during World War I. He was a member of the Army band at Fort Riley, Kansas. He had also served as the fifth man on a horse-drawn artillery piece. He often said that he was really glad to make it as a horn blower. When he met Laura, she was fifteen years old and the marriage was blessed with six children: JESSIE LILLIAS (8 Dec 1919), JOHN LAWRENCE (1 July 1921), CLAUD ERIC (29 Jan 1924 - 28 Feb 1964, age 40 years), SAMUEL GIFFORD (5 Feb 1926 - 8 Mar 1990, age 64 years), LOLITA KATHERINE (28 Mar 1928) and ROBERT EALULIO (18 July 1937).

"During his lifetime, Claud McCorkell worked as a farmer. In the 1920's, he and my mother's brothers owned produce stalls in the Los Angeles produce market. He lost it all in 1929. The family lived in Riverside, Downey, Norco and Corona, California with most of the 1940's on Railroad Street in Corona. Our mother, LAURA, died in 1945 of a stroke. Dad married PAULINE MARSHALL and she died in 1949. After that, he married six other women but could never find someone to make him tow the line. He married EVA BRONSON, who lived the rest of his lifetime. CLAUD ERIC McCORKELL died in 1976 and is buried at Riverside, Calif. He was 82 years old at his death.

"I don't know how well you remember my dad. Jessie could tell you more than I. She knew him years before I came along. I could say she had a front seat to everything. She also got the job of helping to care for us. She is really a special person. What I remember as a small child that everything seemed fine until the depression hit. After that all seemed to go down hill for my mother and father. They were two hard working people. What I remember most about my dad, when I was little, was that he would sing, dance and play any instrument he got his hands on. He played the piano very well. My father didn't have too much time for me. That was all right as I knew he recognized me. My mother loved my dad dearly. She spent many an hour praying for his safe return when he went on his long trips to Los Angeles hauling junk or bailing wire. Life was not easy for them but they knew how to laugh and do thoughtful things for each other.

"The war [WW-II] took its toll on my mother. Both my older brothers enlisted in the Marine Corps. Then later, Sam joined the Navy. It was a very sad time. Much more I remember -- family members that meant so much to me as a little girl. Your grandmother, my aunt Minnie, also your mother Mary and father Paul. I loved them very much plus the memories of you children, now all grown up."

DISCUSSION

CLAUDE ERIC McCORKELL was the fourteenth child and the last son born to his father, George Riley McCorkell (1830), on 29 December 1892 in Stiltson, Kansas. Claude's mother, Lillias Jacinth (Burton) Ketchum, had been widowed in 1881 and married a second time to his father. Lillias had five dependents living with her when she married George in 1883: Three of her Ketchum daughters, a step-son and her recently widowed mother. This was George's third marriage, as his two previous wives had passed away. George had nine children from his previous marriages and at the time of his third marriage, he possibly only had five dependants in the home. At the age of fifty, GEORGE McCORKELL married LILLIE KETCHUM, who was thirty-two years old, in Columbus, Cherokee County, Kansas. They were to have six more children from this marriage but only four lived to adulthood: JOHN (1884), RILEY (1886), LEONA (1889), CATHERINE (1890), CLAUDE (1892) and ANNA OPAL (1894).

The older members of the McCorkell family were already migrating when Claude was born. Claude spent his early years on his father's farm near the mining town of Scammon, Kansas. In 1896 they moved to Joplin, Missouri, where Claude probably received the major part of his education. His father passed away in 1910, when Claude was eighteen years old. Lillias applied for a military "widows pension" on George's Civil War service and received it. Through family tradition, it is believed that Lillias and Claude purchased a small farm in Nina, Arkansas. This evidently wasn't a good investment and Lillias couldn't convince any of her other children to permanently move in with her. It is believed that the 'attraction to go west' was greater after Lillias' daughter Minnie moved to Reno, Nevada in 1903 and near San Diego, California in 1910. Sometime after her oldest McCorkell son, John, went to work in Fallon, Nevada in January 1913, Lillias visited her daughter in California. John's wife recorded it in a letter as occurring in January, 1914. John and Leoda were living in Riverside and liked it. It is unclear whether Claude's other older brothers (Jerome and Gifford) had also migrated to Riverside yet, but they most likely had.

It isn't exactly clear when Claude first went to Riverside, California. His oldest daughter, Jessie, remembers that Claude was in Riverside first and Lillias followed him out to "check up on him." This may have occurred in late 1913 or early 1914 when his mother was noted to have been visiting in Riverside and El Cajon. In any event, many of the extended family had begun migrating to northern and southern California at this time. One reason it is slightly confusing is that so many extended family members moved on or about the same time. Step-son Harry Ketchum was married in Long Beach in 1903. Jerome and Gifford were living in Riverside. Minnie and Allen Bobo moved to Arlington in 1917 from El Cajon, near San Diego. Allen Bobo's sister and her family (Scott) had moved from Arkansas to Riverside. Two of Allen Bobo's Arkansas nieces had also moved with their families to Riverside and El Cajon. Lizzie (Ketchum) Thompson had been encouraged by Lillias to move to Arlington in 1914. Then Sam McCorkell and his family moved from Arizona to Ontario. Of course in 1929, Katie and Kenneth Walker and their family moved to Riverside and temporarily lived with Gifford McCorkell. John and Leota McCorkell returned to Seneca around 1915 when they discovered John had tuberculosis. Riley McCorkell was the older brother closest to Claude and frequently found jobs for him. Claude liked to travel and Riley's Oklahoma descendants remembered that Claude at one time had traveled to California for a visit. Only Riley remained, first in Seneca, Missouri and then in Miami, Okla.

Claude McCorkell enlisted in the United States Army during World War I and served as the' fifth-man' on a horse-drawn artillery piece. He was also in the band and was noted "to be able to play any instrument." At one time, Claude was stationed in Fort Riley, Kansas. He was quite musically talented, as were several other McCorkle-McCorkell ancestors. Before he was discharged, Claude met and married Laura Alvarez in 1918, a pretty young Texas girl of Mexican and Aztec descent. (Claude & Laura were ahead of their time, as mixed marriages are now very common in 1993.) After Claude's discharge from the Army, he settled in Downey, a suburb of Los Angeles and halfway between downtown Los Angeles and Long Beach. He was soon operating a produce stall with Laura's brothers in the Los Angeles Produce Market. (Claude's mother passed away in 1924 and was buried in Riverside.) They were reported to have been very successful until the financial crash in 1929 and the resulting depression. They subsequently moved to Corona, near Riverside, and Claude owned and operated a garden supply business. Claude and Laura McCorkell had nine children, but only six lived to adulthood: JESSIE (1919), LARRY (1921), ERIC (1924), SAMMY (1926), LOLITA (1928) and BUDDY (1937). Unfortunately, Laura began to experience a series of strokes which left her partially paralyzed and with limited speaking ability. Laura passed away in 1945 and was buried in Riverside.

Claude's children primarily grew up in Corona and enjoyed the semi-rural environment. During World War II, Claude's two oldest sons, Larry and Eric joined the Marines and then Sammy joined the Navy. All three survived the war. Claude remarried several times during the remainder of his life, but his children have reported that none could take the place of their mother. Eventually, Claude McCorkell passed away in 1976, at the age of 82. He was buried in Olivewood Cemetery, Riverside.

His children have all grown up, married and have the most descendants of any McCorkell line. Many of the creative McCorkell traits have been demonstrated in this chapter with selections of poetry and prose. Most of them are very family-oriented and attend the annual west coast family picnics. A special treat each year is experiencing Jessie Marshall's Mexican-style enchiladas or tamales, as well as the other fine foods that all the relatives bring.

SUMMARY

Claude E. McCorkell was born in 1892, near Scammon, Kansas and was the fourteenth child of George R. McCorkell, who had fifteen children and a total of three wives. George married his third wife and the mother of Claude, Lillias J. (Burton) Ketchum, in 1883. The third family resided in Kansas and later in Missouri where George, a Civil War veteran, passed away in 1910. George McCorkell was buried in Joplin's old Baptist cemetery. Lillias received a military "Widow's Pension" from her husband's Civil War service, attempted a new start in Nina, Arkansas but soon migrated to California, around 1914. Claude, the youngest son, enlisted in the Army during World War I. He was on an artillery crewman but was really known for his outstanding musical ability. He was recognized for being able to play every piece in the band while in Ft. Riley, Kansas. Prior to his discharge, he met and married Laura Alvarez in 1918, a young Texas girl. They settled in Downey, California and Claude was successful in produce sales until the depression struck in 1929. Claude was flexible and retained a positive attitude. He relocated to Corona, raised his family and created a gardening supply business. More adversity struck when Laura eventually passed away after experiencing a series of strokes in 1945. After experiencing a full life, Claude passed away in 1967. Both are buried in the old family cemetery at Olivewood in Riverside, California. Claude and Laura McCorkell's six children grew up and married. Lolita Lemus and her brother, Robert McCorkell, still reside in the Corona/Norco area, as well as many of their descendants. Most of Claude's descendants are active in attending the annual west coast 'extended McCorkell' family picnic, which Lillias Ketchum-McCorkell helped to originate.
