(Again) at Cortland on 21 Mar 1855 appeared Jemima Ketchum age 89 yrs. Witnesses Sally & Henriette Stowell. At Otsego Co, NY, 9 Oct 1846 appeared Nancy Ayleworth in behalf of Jemima. Stated she became acquainted with Emphraim & Jemima Ketchum when she was about 18 yrs, being about 57 yrs ago. That they then res. Rensselaer in the Co of Albany; that they had 3 childen: MATTHEW, POLLY, & ITHAMER, moved from Rensselaer and reported by friends to be in Spencertown, Columbia Co. From there to Milford, Otsego Co, NY. She was still acquainted with them at the latter place when they still lived together as husband & wife.3 She lived a neighbor to them in Milford, Otsego, Co where they had 3 additional children: OBEDIUS (prob Obediah), SENECA, & SARAH."

Milford, NY Cemetery - Founded 1813   ". . . 1790 census shows Ephraim-5 in Rensselaerville which is in the Helderberg mountains west of Albany. In 1800 he was of "Otsego Co which included Town of Maryland. He, with others, were granted 4800 acres in what was then [Milford,] Maryland twp, Otsego Co 26 Jul 1796. In 1800 census, Ephraim Ketchum, wife and 6 children in Worcester Twp., Otsego Co., NY.4 (Note: Spencertown,Columbia Co, near Mass, where EPHRAIM-4 & wife Mary Spencer settled after leaving CT was founded by her brothers, one of whom was Ithamer Spencer.)"

"Jemima [Ketchum] got her pension in 1848 at the rate of $80 per anum and a further grant of 160 acres of Bounty Land in #55 when she was at age 87. She died 1857 in Virgil. The biggest surprise in Jamina's [sic, Jemima] petition was Ephraim's presence at Saratoga for the surrender of Burgoyne two years prior to his first known enlistment. Then marching to York and being at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis. We can only speculate on the reason Ephraim was there was he enlisted earlier left after the battle and was older than we thought. It was quite common for soldiers to leave their units to see their families, to harvest the crops etc."5

1, 5. Perry, Henry. Along the Way Your Roots, 1981. "Ephraim Ketchum 1760-1803." Henry speculated that Ephraim was born around 1760 which would make him about 17 year old in his reported 1777 service. Later on, he amended this to "a little older than we thought." [If he was at least 21 years old, he would have been born in 1756. This focuses the birth year a little better than the general 1755-65. See the 1800 census on footnote 6 below.] Also, Henry Perry and others, speculated from Jemima's Widow's Pension & Bouty Land claim in 1845, which was supported by Nancy Aylesworth, who also said: "Ephraim often told of the hardships and privations which he endured." His military service was probably of two types: (1) 1777, Levied or drafted into the militia for short periods (1 or 2 months) of time, sometimes just for a battle, around 1777 and, (2) in 1779, a regular line regiment enlistment. Kenneth H. MacFarland replied to Henry Perry in 1981 and said: "Col. John Harper was colonel of a regiment of levies with Walter Vrooman as one of the company commanders. The Levies were either drafts from the militia for short periods of service or specific organizations enlisted for the defense of the New York frontiers in the period 1779-1783. The Third New York Regiment of the Line was filled in 1781 with drafts and volunteers from these levies." [Also see Note-2, below, on Albany Co., NY Rev. War records/drafts. Henry Perry wrote Along the way your Roots, Vol I, II., 1981 and was a descendant of Rev. Ithamer Ketchum. A copy of his two booklets are in the Cooperstown Historical Society library.)]

2. Bullard, Sandra. Telephone, 22 June 2000. Milford Town Historian (abullard@wpe.com), reported that EPHRAIM KETCHUM most likely was buried on the highest ground on his farmland. She also works at the Cooperstown Historical Society Library, NY. (Ms. Marion Kern, previous Austerlitz Town Historian, recalls that she saw somewhere that EPHRAIM KETCHUM was buried in an "unmarked grave." [Addleman, Robert P., Photo (Milford, Otsego Co., NY), 8 May 2000. The Milford, Otsego Co., NY church and cemetery were established in 1813. ]

3.   Note: This statement was made in 1845 and the reference "when they still lived together as husband & wife" was probably referring to before 1803 when Ephraim was still alive.

4. Stork, Ginger Ketchum., KETCHAM KABLES newsletters from Davison, MI, 1980-90. She was a major Ketchum researcher during this time. Most of all this data was originally derived from Ginger's newsletters. Also, see her "logical presentation" below.

On 8 May 2000, he took Bob Addleman on a photo tour of 3 NY cemeteries -- Sentinel Heights, Forest Hills & Ketchumville.)

7. Addleman. Robert, Email, 17 Oct 2010. "The Los Angeles Times (10-17-10) had an article in the Vacation section (pg. L6) about Sharon CT which mentioned our Calkins ancesters (Ketchum Line). They were on the Mayflower in New England and then migrated down to CT and westward to NY."

8. Maiurano, Karen, Email <ksmaiurano@hotmail.com>, 18 Oct 2010, "Did you ever find out where Ephraim (Jemima's husband) [Ketchum] is buried?  Every once in awhile I surf the internet for info, but haven't found anything new.  Most likely one of those unmarked or marked and long lost graves that will never be found. I live near the Saratoga Battlefield, and have often wished I knew more about his service there.  They have recently announced improvements made to the database of American soldiers who served there.  Although Ephraim's name doesn't appear in their database, Jemima's Pension Application states that he was present for Burgoyne's Surrender, and I think that I have seen reference to it elsewhere.  It will be interesting to keep an eye on this improved - and improving - database. I have such a deep respect for those young men who marched up and down the East Coast without adequate clothing, shelter or food to fight the British."

NOTE: Ephraim is listed as "EPHRAIM SENECA KETCHUM b abt 1765" on the LDS website.

Note: EPHRAIM-5, a son of EPHRAIM-4 -- LOGIC by Ginger Ketchum Stork:

EPHRAIM's BIRTH

Ginger Stork, a Ketchum researcher and publisher of Ketcham Kables newsletter, provided this logical argument for Ephraim-5 being a son of Ephraim-4. The problem was created by the absent minded minister who forgot to note the names he baptized until much later and then he forgot two Ketchum names.

EPHRAIM KETCHUM

It is clear from the above chart that Ephraim Ketchum/Ketcham served in the Revolutionary War and enlisted twice (1779 & 1780) in a New York "Line Regiment."

What may be difficult, if not impossible to verify, is Jemima's statement that Ephraim Ketchum was also at Saratoga (1777). Her other claims were supported by affidavits from serveral Revolutionary War soldiers in their 70's and 80's which gave Jemima a certain 'reliability' in her recollections. If Ephraim was in the early town militias, service was very brief -- only for a battle, or one or two months. To further complicate things, most of the early records were burned.

The Columbia Co., NY GenWebsite reported: "Since many of the NY Records for service in the militia were lost, especially for the early years, a large number of those without a record of service in the field may well have served. That is particularly true for the year 1777 when the Albany County Militia Regiments were called out in drafts to serve with the Continental Army in opposing the British invasion of General Burgoyne from Canada that culminated in the two Battles of Saratoga.  The militia serving in that campaign were paid by the Continental Congress.  Unfortunately all those records were destroyed in a fire in Washington in the early 1800s. Various pension files and other documents indicate that the 1777 call ups of the militia to meet that invasion were massive."

A first cousin of Ephraim's, Jonathan Ketchum - a son of Lt. Joseph Ketchum from Oblong, Dutchess Co., NY, served in Col. Robert Rensselaer's 8th Regiment of the Albany Co., Militia. He also was at Brandywine & Saratoga. In Reynolds 1911 book, Hudson & Mohawk Valleys, page 1133, it says: "He [Jonathan Ketchum] was with other members of the Ketchum family a resident of Saratoga county prior to settling at Fort Edward, which became his permanent home."

Greg Ketcham wrote the following in July, 2003: "First a little background- I have had a few exchanges via email and phonewith Ken Johnson, author of Bloodied Mohawk and a history of Fort Plank. I located a copy in a local library out of curiousity, and found that Johnson did a huge amount of work compiling both service records, payrolls, muster rolls, primary docu- mentation, etc. to weave his story. Notably, he provides a brief record on Ephraim Ketchum, the only source being quoted is his pension app (RWPA W26176):

   - a private in Capt. Walter Vrooman's co., Col. John Harper's Levies, served at Fort Johnstown.

   - a private in the 2nd NY, served at Forts Herkimer and Stanwix

   - as Lieutenant in Capt. Lawrence Gross's co., Colonel Marinus Willett's regiment of Levies, 1781. Listed as a deserter, Jul 24, 1781 (Revolutionary War Rolls: Jacket 173).

It appears that Johnson drew the above conclusions from the pension application. Again, regarding his Continental Army service, it makes perfect sense, as the amalgamated 4th /2nd NY was the last regiment to garrison Fort Stanwix. After it's destruction, the troops were redeployed to other posts, notably Fort Herkimer. The route described from the Highlands to Yorktown is also plausible, and well documented in the published 4th NY Orderly Books (Almon Lauber, Albany, NY).

However, Johnson's placing of Ephraim in Willett's Levies, and his purported desertion, is completely at odds with the rest of his service as stated by Jemima. This would seem to be coexistant with his service in the 2nd NY.

MARYLAND, OTSEGO CO., NY

Ephraim Ketchum joined the Spencers and others on the Maryland land grant in Otsego Co., NY1 sometime before 1800. He was in the 1800 U.S. Census as living in Worcester Twp., Otsego Co., NY. He was reported to have died in 1803 by his wife, Jemima Ketchum, on her Widow's Pension Application of 1845. It is believed that they were living on a farm in the town of Milford.

Some of Ephaim & Jemima Ketchum's older children had already migrated westward to Cortland, Co., NY, where Jemima eventually moved.
