NOTE-2: In 1860, Rachel was 54, Sarah (Ganoe) Addleman was 80, Emma Thompson was 11 and Wm. C. Shives was a 27 year old carpenter. He also had a 1/2 year old son, Charles Townsend Shive, b 25 Oct 1859.

1. Burket Cemetery Photos, 1986-91, 'Addleman Row' by Robert P. Addleman. (Other data was extracted from bible data sent by Paul Vance.) On his tombstone, his name read: "C. TOWNSEND SHIVE".

" I am a Civil War reenactor doing research in the 1860's Philadelphia newspapers.  Occasionally I get "side-tracked" from my focus of research when something catches my eye.  This list of sick and wounded soldiers, also has names of those that died before being sent to Philadelphia.  One of those was Sgt. W. C. Shive, who did not have a regiment listed.  That piqued my interest.  I looked him up in the NPS Soldier's & Sailor's System http://www.civilwar.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm and found him listed in both the 3rd PA Infantry - Co. D ( 3 mo. enlistment) and as a Sgt. in Co. D of the 49th PA Infantry.  I then went to the PA in the CW site:
http://www.pa-roots.com/~pacw/infantry/paregimentsnew.html  and although he is listed in the 3rd PVI, I could not find him listed in the 49th PVI.  If you check this 49th site, the author comments at the bottom of the page on the number of men missing from the rolls per Bates' tally.  I also looked him up on Ancestry & found him listed for both Regiments and he is also in the CW Pension Index,  his orphan son Charles collecting the pension, which is listed under his guardian, I presume. (attached below).  I also found Charles T. Shive listed in the 1880 census living with the William Addleman family in Warrior's Mark Township.   Finally I did a search for Wm. C. Shive, and your web site came up.  Although the soldiers of the 49th PA are not the focus of my research, I would hate for any soldier to be forgotten.  I hope that one of his descendents might be interested in this further information.
Sincerely, Eileen Campos" [camp26@comcast.net]

Note: "I believe I know where the Batton comes from.  My study is the BattXn family.  William Batten (Batton Battin) first patented 200 acres of land in Huntingdon Co. in 1792 with his cousin John and then moved instead to Lancaster Co.  William was a Revolutionary War veteran who had served three times and was very well known.  He would have known Andrew Addleman and possibly there is some connection between William's land in Huntingdon Co. and Andrew's move.  I was hoping for a marriage connection but I don't think that's possible <drmbaker@dewstar.com>".

Note: 1880 Warriors Mark U.S. Census has orphan Charles T. Shive living with his uncle William B. Addleman family.

[Family oral history reports Luis Sanches returned to Puerto Rico after Ernest Addleman died. Susan (Neff) Addleman remained a widow.] (A Dr. Henry K. Neff was a physician in the village before returning to Huntingdon.). Sue I. Addleman filed for his military pension on 26 Sep 1901. No children.

"ERNEST L. ADDLEMAN, railroad officer at this point, died in the Medico-Chirurgical hospital, Philadelphia, last Thursday noon, whither he had gone a week before. . . . [He] was born near the Cross Roads, in Warriorsmark Twp, on the 10th of June, 1870, and with exception of the past two or three years, spent all his life at the place of his birth. On the 24th of July, 1899, he was appointed to a position on the PA railroad police force and stationed at Huntingdon, and some weeks later was married to Miss Sue Neff (1874), of Warriorsmark Twp. . . . Before entering the railroad service he engaged in farming on the Addleman place near Cross Roads. . . . He was an intelligent young man but very reserved. . . . He is survived by his wife, his mother, Mrs. Mary E. Addleman, . . . and three brothers, viz: Joseph, who is a soldier in company L, Eighth United States infantry, Philippine Islands; Verner C., of Tyrone, and Alva, at home.

"At the age of 19 the deceased enlisted in Sheridan Troop on the 16th of October, 1889, and continued his membership in the organization till the present, being advanced first to the position of corporal and later to sergeant. He enlisted in the United States volunteer service with the troop in the spring of 1898, and served with due credit to himself and the organization from Mount Gretna to Porto Rico and return. He was an apt student and always had an intelligent idea of his duty as a soldier, and therefore was a good trooper. In execution he was deliberate. Doubtless if the necessity would have arisen he would have stood like a rock before an attacking foe. He was one of the best marksmen in the troop, and occupied a place on the State shoot team for a number of years. . . . The funeral of deceased took place from his mother's residence in Warriorsmark Twp., on Monday morning at 10 o'clock. [He died 9 May 1901.]"

This copy of the out-of-print book was purchased by Martha Addleman Ennis in a used book store in San Francisco several years ago. She loaned it to this author for reproduction in April, 1990. The book was published when William Ganoe was sixty-nine years of age. It focuses upon the daily occurences of a Methodist Minister's young son in southcentral, Penn. A major theme is the closeness between mother and son. Many parts of this novel were probably autobiographical. William's (1881, Blue) father was a Methodist Minister, Rev. William V. Ganoe (1847), and his mother was Cynthia Constance Addleman (1852). William attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and graduated 14 June 1907.
