MUSCATINE CO., IA

Two more Addleman siblings from Warriors Mark, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania also sought their fortunes in the west and settled in Muscatine Co., Iowa: Mary (Addleman) Hoopes (1819) and John M. Addleman (1822). A nephew (son of Nancy (Addleman) Shipley), John C. Shipley (ca 1834), later joined them in Lake Township.

Mary Addleman was the ninth child of John M., and Sarah (Ganoe) Addleman and was born 6 May 1819 in Warriors Mark, Huntingdon Co., Penn. She married Lindley Hoopes on 22 November 1838 in Birmingham, Huntingdon Co., Penn. At that time, Birmingham was one of the oldest villages in Warriors Mark Township and was a westward stop on the Pennsylvania Railroad. Lindley Hoopes was the sixth of twelve children born to Israel and Hannah (Jones) Hoopes. He was born 5 Sep 1815 in New Gardon Township, Chester Co., Penn. His Quaker ancestors, Joshua Hoopes, his third wife Isabel and his son Daniel were English emigrants to Pennsylvania in 1683. Daniel Hoopes was baptized 27 May 1672 in Skelton-in-Cleveland, Yorkshire, England, a son of Joshua and his deceased first wife. Lindley Hoopes was a fourth generation decendant of Daniel. Lindley became independent at the age of sixteen and moved to Mifflin Co., Penn., as a farm laborer. In 1834-36 he moved to Birmingham Twp., Huntingdon Co., and learned cabinet-making. In 1836 he went west with two other young men and traveled through Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, before returning to Birmingham Twp., Huntingdon Co., Penn. In 1839-45 he lived in Warriors Mark where he knew the Addlemans. In 1845-47 he lived in Clearfield Co., and worked on a saw/grist mill and a dam. In 1847-50, he built canal boats in McVeytown, Mifflin Co., Penn. In 1850 he was the proprietor of a hotel in Mechanicsville, Penn. His last job in Pennsylvania was supplying provisions to men who were building a tunnel through the Allegheny Mountains. Lindley and Mary Hoopes then moved to Muscatine County, Iowa on 18 April 1854 and two years later, they moved to High Prairie (Lake Township).

Lindley became a prosperous farmer and helped organize The Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Muscatine. He served as president, his son John served until 1927 and J. Wendell Hoopes still serves on the board. Lindley was a Republican and a long-time member of the Methodist Church. The Hoopes family have a well documented genealogy (reference The Hoopes Family Record, Volume I-III, The Hoopes Family Organization, 1979; county histories; and Hoopes Commemorative Booklet, 305th Family Reunion (West Chester, PA), 27 Aug 1988)). Several Pennsylvania Hoopes descendants have been nationally prominent, some of whom are: HUBERT HORATIO HUMPHREY, Jr., U.S. Senator from Minnesota (1948-1964); SPENCER WOOLLEY KIMBALL, 12th President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (30 Dec 1973); HOWARD HUGHES; and EVELYN HOOPES TEEGEN, Ambassador to the Fiji Islands (Oct 1989). Ambassador Teegen is a descendant of Lindley & Mary (Addleman) Hoopes and the daughter of J. Wendell Hoopes. Several Addleman/Hoopes descendants have joined the DAR through the GANOE line.

John Michael Addleman (1822) was the younger brother of Mary (Addleman) Hoopes. He was born and raised in Warriors Mark, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. He married Elizabeth Freeman on 9 April 1844 and had nine children. On 13 March 1867, he decided to follow his sister to Lake Township, Muscatine County, Iowa.

A son-in-law, William P. Anthony, described them as:

"John and Elizabeth Addleman, were plain, common-sense people, greatly interested in religious matters. Their lives were largely spent in toil and self-denial, in caring for their home, although in many ways not without quite a recompense, both in their children and in securing a fair competence. Your Grandmother Addleman died in the eighties, and being a strong healthy woman, one would have thought that she would live to a ripe old age, and if she had not contracted typhoid fever no doubt would have lived many years. Your Grandfather Addleman was never a very rugged man, and ordinarily one would have supposed that he would have not outlived your grandmother, but he lived a number of years after her death, dying in the nineties, and both of them are buried in the cemetery back of High Prairie Chapel where your mother and I were married."

John Calvin Shipley (ca 1834) was born in Warriors Mark, Huntingdon Co., Penn., and was a nephew to Mary Hoopes and John M. Addleman. His mother, Nancy Addleman (1810) married William Shipley who operated the local Warriors Mark tavern. William Shipley died 1 Oct 1841 and his 1841 will was probated 8 Oct 1841. He left his wife and two children under the age of 21: John C., and Sarah Ann Shipley. Nancy remarried to M. Simpson but died a few years later at the age of thirty-nine (13 Aug 1850) and is buried in Burket Cemeter at Warriors Mark. In 1850, John was living with his Aunt Eliza Patton and was working as a clerk (reference Chapter 5). He was reported to have gone west to Kansas in 1900 and apparently settled in Lake Township, Muscatine Co., IA, near his youngest aunt and uncle. He was mentioned in his cousin Joseph Erskine Hoopes' biography in a Muscatine County history. Very little is known about him.

"Lindley HOOPES was still alive in 1911 at age ninety-five. He was born on 5 September, 1815 in Chester Co., Penna., the son of Isaac and Hannah (JONES) HOOPES. [Isaac Hoopes was of Welsh descent.] He went to Muscatine County on 18 April, 1854 with his brother, H. R. HOOPES. They purchased 400 acres in Lake Twp., In 1856. Lindley was both a farmer and a carpenter. He was married to MARY ADDLEMAN, the daughter of John and Sarah (Ganoe) Addleman of Huntingdon Co., Penna. on 22 November, 1838. She was born on 6 May, 1819, one of ten children , and died on 12 May, 1904. She is buried in High Prairie cemetery. To them were born nine children, five of whom, three sons and two daughters, are still living. In 1854 she came to Iowa, and lived for two years in Muscatine. In 1856 she moved to the home in which she died, and here she has spent the last fifty years of her life. When a young girl fifteen years of age she was converted, and united with the Methodist Episcopal church. . . . Before coming to Iowa, their house in Pennsylvania was, for some time, the home of a young man, who is today Bishop J. H. Vincent. . . . Early last winter she had an attack of lagrippe, from which she never recovered. . . . She had the satisfaction of seeing all of her sons and daughters and nearly all of her grandchildren converted and in active membership in the church to which she had given so many years of active service."

"Yes I am a grandson of MARY ADDLEMAN HOOPES and my father, JOHN A. HOOPES spoke many times of his Addleman cousins. I can remember DALLAS A. when I was very small. He and his brother ANDY lived on adjoining farms 3 miles of where I was born and raised and still live, alone. My wife died 9 years ago. My farm is part of the old LINDLY HOOPES farm.

"DALLAS A. was the father of DORCEY, MILT and FRANK. Was that right? MILT sold insurance in West Liberty, Ia. FRANK farmed and later moved to West Liberty and lived with MILT. DORCEY worked insurance in Muscatine and he had a daughter 'ERMA' now deceased. Sorry I can't give you more information on my Addleman cousins. They were all held in high esteem."

--------

[Evidently the death of Mary Elizabeth Addleman (1851) was well publicized with two obituaries and a funeral notice. Also see Old Historic Letters. Only the one from Clay Center, Clay Co., Kansas is reprinted below:]

"The funeral services for Miss MARY ADDLEMAN, who died on Sunday afternoon after a short illness, were held this afternoon at the Methodist church at 2:30 and were conducted by Rev. E. H. Knepp, the pastor . . . Mary Eliza Addleman died at Clay Center, Kansas, May 10th, 1925, and [had] she lived until June 19th, she would have been seventy-four years old. She was born at Warrior's Mark in Huntington County, Pennsylvania. Her parents were J0HN and ELIZABETH ADDLEUMAN [sic] who have been gone a number of years, but surviving her there are three brothers, A. P. ADDLEMAN of Indianapolis, Indiana, and WILLIAM and DORSEY B. ADDLEMAN of Muscatine, Iowa; also a sister there, Mrs. SARAH E. ALTEKRUSE, and Mrs. W. P. ANTHONY of Clay Center.

"When Miss Addleman was about fifteen years old her parents removed from Pennsylvania to Muscatine County, Iowa, and here her early girlhood was spent upon her parent's farm. She taught for a number of terms in the public schools of Muscatine county, and upon coming to Clay Center [, KS] about thirty-five years ago, taught a number of terms in the public city schools. Much of her life has been spent with her sister, Mrs. W. P. ANTHONY.

"At the place of her birth, when fourteen years old, she united with the Methodist church and upon the removal of her parents to Iowa, she transfered her membership to the High Prairie Chapel, subsequently, upon becoming a resident of Clay Center she united with this church, in which she has always been active in promoting its welfare, also that of the Sunday school in which much of the time she was a teacher. Wherever she lived for nearly sixty years of her life, she was a devoted member of the church, loyal to its precepts and teachings. [Burial was in Greenwood cemetery.]"

[The U.S. Census for 1900 shows John Addleman, age 78, living with Matilda.]

"HENRY R. ALTEKRUSE, for many years prominently connected with the farming and stock-raising interests of Muscatine county and now living retired in the city of Muscatine, was born on a farm seven miles from Baltimore, in the state of Maryland, August 8, 1839. His parents, Rudolph and Sophia (VO DERMARK) Altekruse, were both born in Germany, and came to America soon after their marriage. The father worked on a farm in Maryland for some years and in 1840, believing that the west presented more favorable inducements than could be found elsewhere, located in the wilderness on the line of Seventy-six and Lake townships, Muscatine county, Iowa. Here he built a cabin of round logs, with clapboard roof and puncheon floor, and began as a pioneer to acquire financial independence. . . . After acquiring a competence he erected a comfortable frame dwelling, in which the family took up their home. Here he passed away February 12, 1891, his faithful companion having departed September 21, 1890. Their bodies were first deposited in a country cemetery but later were taken "up and now repose in Greenwood cemetery at Muscatine. There were eight children in the family, of whom SOPHIA, WILLIAM, ERNEST, SAMUEL, ELIZA and MARY are deceased, those still living being HENRY R., our subject, and RUDOLPH J., a retired farmer who makes his home in Muscatine.

" . . . In 1877 Mr. ALTEKRUSE was united in marriage to Mrs. SARAH MATILDA (ADDLEMAN) BUCK, the widow of IRA BUCK, by whom she had two children: HARRY, now living in the southwestern part of Iowa; and ESTELLA, deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Altekruse three children have been born, all of whom are living: ARTHUR J., a sketch of whom appears below; EMMA, the wife of CHESTER McCABE, of Seventy-six township; and IRA B., a mechanical engineer of Moline, Illinois. . . . He and his wife are worthy members of the Methodist Episcopal church.

"ARTHUR J. ALTEKRUSE was born on the farm on which he now resides in Muscatine county, June 14, 1878. He received his preliminary education in the district schools and for two years was a student in the schools at Muscatine. Laying his books aside, he assumed responsibility upon the home farm and is now devoting his attention largely to feeding stock. He has a few shorthorn cattle and three trotting horses, being at the present time owner of eighty acres of land, although he cultivates two hundred and twenty acres. Having been thorough trained in farming under his father, he gives promise of gaining an enviable reputation in his chosen calling. In 1905 he was married to Miss REBECCA MILLER, a daughter of Charles and Cynthia Miller, of Muscatine. Politically he is an independent democrat, and he has served one term as township trustee. He and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal church and fraternally he is connected with the Modern Brotherhood of America."

"JENNIE HAZLETT ADLEMAN was a native of Lake township, Muscatine county. Here she first saw the light of day in November, 1856, and it was there that she lived the greater part of her life. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Hazlett, grew to womanhood in the community and received her education at the Muscatine High School, being a graduate of the class of 1875. Twenty-seven years ago she was united in marriage with A. P. Addleman, their union being blessed with two children, MABEL E. and CLARENCE, who survive to comfort their father. Her mother, Mrs. HANNAH HAZLETT, and two brothers survive, the latter being WILLIAM HAZLETT, an attorney of Pocahontas, Iowa, and J. C. HAZLETT, an engineer, whose family reside in this city. The decedent resided in Lake township, where Mr. Addleman followed the pursuits of the farm until October 1st, 1904, when the family moved to Muscatine city. Mrs. Addleman was an estimable woman, a faithful member of the Methodist church, and will be greatly missed. The funeral appointment will be announced later."

"ANTHONY: -- The announcement of the death of Mrs. W. P. ANTHONY at her home in this city on last Saturday afternoon at 4:15 brought sorrow to the hearts of scores of friends in this community in which she had resided for nearly half a century. Her last illness was of short duration. She was taken ill with the flu, from the effects of which her frail constitution would not permit her to rally. To the last, her devoted husband and children were by her side, rendering every possible attention and service, and are now sorrowing b ecause a loving and loved mother has gone. Her work on earth is finished and she sleeps in peace. The end came as quietly and peacefully as she had lived.

"Mrs. Anthony was distinctively a home lover and home-maker. Most of her interest in life centered about her family circle, thinking always of the welfare of her husband and children and to keeping the home bright and shining. So great is the influence of a sweet-minded woman on those around them that it is almost boundless and is reflected in their lives. Judge and Mrs. Anthony observed their fifty-third wedding anniversay the twenty-fifth of last September and with the exception of a few years, their entire married life has been spent in the home on North Fifth street. What a drawing power that home has been. Not once since their children came into their home have they missed having all of their children with them for bvreakfast on Christmas morning and the grandchildren have joined in the early morning festivities during the later years. The mother is the first one to be called from the circle. Her walk in life was marked by composure, gentleness, meekness and forbearance, and to her children she will be and inspiration all the days of their lives.

"RACHEL EMMA ADDLEMAN was born in Warrior's Mark, Huntingdon county, Pennsylvania, October 30th, 1852, and died at Clay Center, Kansas, march 13th, 1926, at the age of 73 years, 4 months and 10 days. Her parents were JOHN and ELIZABETH ADDLEMAN. In their family there were four brothers and three sisters. Her parents have been dead for many years, but surviving her there are three brothers, A. P. ADDLEMAN, living near Indianapolis, Ind.; D. B. ADDLEMAN of Muscatine, Ia. and W. C. ADDLEMAN of Manchester Ia. Also a sister, SARAH M. ALTEKRUSE of Muscatine, Ia. Another sister, MISS MARY ADDLEMAN, passed away at the Anthony home just a year ago.

"She was married to W. P. ANTHONY of Clay Center, Kans, September 25th, 1872, at the Methodist High Prairie Chapel, seven miles west of Muscatine, IA., of which she was a member. Immediately after their marriage, they came to Clay Center to start their new home. At that time the nearest point by rail was Manhattan, and from there the journey was made overland. Here she was introduced to frontier life, there being but few people in Clay County, and Clay Center was barely more than a post office. Here most of her life has been spent in her home with her husband and children, and to her and to them it has been continual source of pleasure and unalloyed happiness. To them she leaves behing the hallowed associations of many years to lighten their sorrow.

"Besides her husband, W. P. ANTHONY, there are left of her family five sons and daughters, LAURA ANTHONY STRATTON, ROY C. ANTHONY, LEE E. ANTHONY, MABEL E. SCHOOLEY and MARY E. ANTHONY. Also five grandchildren, CLARK M. and JOSEPHINE ANTHONY, children of R. C. and JENNIE ANTHONY; RACHEL and "WALLACE LEE ANTHONY, children of LEE. E. and HARRIET ANTHONY, and MAURICE SCHOOLEY, son of S. D. and MABEL SCHOOLEY. Mrs. Anthony's sister, MRS. ALTEKRUSE and son ART arrived from Muscatine, Ia., Saturday afternoon just a few minutes after her life went out. The funeral was held at the family home 2003 Fifth street Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and was in charge of her pastor, Rev. E. H. Knepp of the First Methodist church. . . . The body was tenderly laid to rest in the Greenwood cemetery. . . . Out of respect for Judge Anthony the court House was closed during the funeral. . . ."
