PA to MO

William Addleman was the youngest son of John (1769) and Catherine (Shockar) Addleman to be born in Morgan Twp., Greene County, Pennsylvania (reference Chapter 17). He grew up in Greene County, which is adjacent to Washington County, Penn. On 10 Mar 1842, he married MARY HANNAH LITZENBERG in Washington County. She was a daughter of William and Christena (Bottenfield) Addleman. William Litzenberg migrated to Missouri in 1843 and his daughter and William Addleman migrated ten years later. An excerpt from the Litzenberg book has been reprinted because it reveals more about the local migrations of that era.

"WILLIAM LITZENBERG was born at Winchester, Virginia on April 7, 1790. . . . When a boy his parents moved to Washington County, Pennsylvania. He was taught the coopers trade by his father. . . . On Sunday before Christmas, 1811, he married CHRISTENA BOTTENFIELD, daughter of John Bottenfield and Barbara Hill and a sister to Adam Bottenfield [see Chapter 17, page 399]. She was born at Harpers Ferry, Virginia on October 29, 1791 and went when a babe to Greene County, Pennsylvania. . . .

"Having decided to go West, he sold his farm and on April 1, 1843, William with his family, took a flatboat at Millsboro, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and traveled on the Monongahela River to Pittsburgh, where they boarded the steamer Manhattan and went down the Ohio River to Cairo, then up the Mississippi to St. Louis. There they boarded the steamboat, Iowa and went up the Missouri River and landed at Weston, Missouri on May 1, 1843, after being on the water one month (family communication). He lived there one year, then moved to Stewartsville, Missouri, settling in South Washington Township, DeKalb County. . . . "William died February 17, 1868 and his wife November 25, 1862. Both are buried on the lot of his son-in-law, Thomas L. King, in the Presbyterian Cemetery, Stewartsville, Missouri. They had eleven children, JOHN B., JAMES, GEORGE, SINTHA, MARY [b 10 Mar 1842 (Greene Co., PA); m WILLIAM ADDLEMAN], HIRAM, REBECCA, HARRIET, SIMON, WILLIAM and Lucinda."

One of the major researchers for this section has been Hilda (Addleman) Griffith of Adrian, Missouri. Over the years, she has maintained a large correspondence and has always provided copies of whatever she has had to other interested descendants. Again, credit is also given to Olive M. Parker for having written the 1972 Garmire book which included an extensive Addleman genealogy. There are still many genealogical questions to be answered about the early history of these families in southwestern Pennsylvania.

" . . . . . I got into the genealogy business almost too late in life to get very far. I am a member of the DAR. [I] have been for the past 20 years, when relatives of my Father, James Jackson Fuller, came to see me and asked me to become a member. They had history from my great-grandfather an wife, Mildred BIRD, and on back to Revolutionary War. My mother, Patience Ida ELLIS, was a daughter of Rebecca Anna ADDLEMAN, who married my grandFather, Neumeirs ELLIS. Grandmother did tell me, many years ago, that her parents and their family came from Germany to Pennsylvania. . . . William ADDLEMAN, son of John [Addleman (1769)], & wife, who was a LITZENBERGER, . . . [lived in] Greene Co., PA where my grandmother REBECCA ANNA ADDLEMAN was born, December 25, 1842. ADA ADDLEMAN [was] born [in] Greene County Penn. 1844. BRYAN [was] born 1860, (must have been some [in]between).

"The family came down Ohio River on River Boat to St. Louis, MO and from St. Louis to Stewartsville, MO. LLOYD was born 1864 in Clinton County, MO. JOHN born 1867, and ALBERT born 1870, also Clinton County, MO. Rebecca Anna married Neumeirs Ellis in 1871, my grandparents. They had the following children: PATIENCE IDA ELLIS, born August 5, 1872; WILLIAM THOMAS ELLIS, born March 7; 1874, GEORGE ALBERT, born Nov 16, 1875; and LOGAN DYSENT ELLIS, born Oct 8, 1876. The Ellis family are all dead except for myself, a sister and one brother and great-granchildren. Adam Addleman's family [are] all gone. [I] never knew Bryan's family nor Albert's. Lloyd had four children. They are all gone except the eldest daughter who is 95 and in a nursing home at Leavenworth, Kansas.

"Seems I never had any luck trying to trace family history farther back than late 1700's. So when my health got so bad, I could not do any more, I sort of lost interest. I had two children. My son, WENDELL RASCO, lives here at Barnard. My daughter, IDA MILDRED RASCO HALL, went to Denver, Colorado, where she and her family lived from then on. She died Oct 31, 1987. Her family all live there. Wendell's family live in various towns in MO. I very much doubt if I will live that long, but [I] would like to learn a little bit more about my mother's family. She died in 1908 at the birth of twin boys. .

"... I am 95 years of age and in very poor health, so it is hard for me to write. I can't use a typewriter anymore and my right eye is very nearly gone. ... My mother married JAMES JACKSON FULLER. There were 6 of us. My mother died at age 36 at the birth of twin sons. . . . My grandmother had told me she was Pennsylvania Dutch and came to Missouri by boat on the river.

Note: "I came across your genealogy web site while searching for the obituary for my step-grandfather, D. Wendell Rasco. He passed away Nov. 30 in Maryville, MO. He was in the PA to MO section of your site. I thought you might want to update the site.

Wendell was not only my step-grandfather, but he was my several-times-removed cousin. His mother, Gwen Fuller Rasco, was my great-great aunt. Gwen's sister and next-door neighbor was my great-grandmother, Anna Mildred Fuller Schmitt, whose daughter Mildred Verlene Schmitt Kelly, is my maternal grandmother. Wendell married my paternal grandmother Marjorie Rasco after his wife died. So Wendell was my Grandma Verlene's cousin and my Grandma Marjorie's second husband.

We always joked that the branches of the family tree crossed when they got married"!

Cheers -
Terri (Vanfossan) McCaffrey

ALBERT

1.22(12)4 [ALBERT H-5 (1860), WILLIAM-4 (1817), JOHN-3 (1769), DANIEL-2, PHILIP ADDLEMAN-1] ALBERT HUDSON, ADDLEMAN, b 6 Apr 1860 (near Stewartsville, Clinton Co., MO), d 2 Jan 1942 (Greenacres, WA), bur Pines Cem (Opportunity, WA); m LILLY A. HARRIS (b Nov 1862 (IA), dau of Reuben Dooley (1819-1882) & Jemima Jane (Wells (1824-1911)) Harris, d 28 Jun 1953 (Spokane, WA)) 7 Dec 1879 (Bradyville, MO).

"[ALBERT HUDSON ADDLEMAN], "Huts," and LILLIE HARRIS were married on 7 Dec 1879 in Bradyville, Missouri. They were living near Clearinda, Iowa and in 1884 some of their relatives decided to go to Wyoming. My father's health was not very good. The doctor told him he had weak lungs and might have tuberculosis and should go to a high and dry climate. They decided to join the party headed for Wyoming.

"In the party were Uncle Bryce and aunt Olive and what ever family they had at the time, also Uncle Joe and aunt Elizabeth SNODGRASS, an older sister of my mother and their family, aunt Olive Addleman was also a sister of my mother. My mother's brother William H. HARRIS and wife Addie and one son. I do not know the month they left, or how long it took them to make the trip. My father did not own a team and wagon, but did own a saddle horse. There was room for my mother on one of the wagons, but no room for my father. So he decided to ride his horse on the trip. When he got tired riding he got off and walked. From Iowa they crossed the Missouri River into the State of Nebraska and followed the pioneer route up the Platte River into Wyoming. The old trail followed near the present day Highway 80 from Omaha, Nebraska to Cheyenne, Wyoming. I have traveled that highway several times and used to think as I drove along, I was going as far in thirty minutes as they traveled all day.

"When they arrived in Sheridan, Wyoming, I presume in early summer, my parents filed on a homestead in what they called the "Rabbit Creek Country," a few miles out of Sheridan near the Big Horn Mountains. Their first living quarters was a half-dugout in the side of the hill with a wooden structure in front. In 1884, the Crow Indians were not on [a] reservation and they were all around them and my mother, as a young woman, was deathly afraid of them, although they never harmed them. My oldest sister, Sena, was born in this half-dugout. The first winter they were there, they lived without any money, except to buy postage stamps. They had exchanged work for vegetables and gone hunting in the nearby mountains and killed enough "deer to have meat for the winter. They had purchased some chickens and cows, so they were able to exchange butter and eggs for groceries at the store in Sheridan.

"One of their early experiences was, Dad had just finished the evening milking and fed some milk to some kittens just outside the door and went in the house and sat down. Soon in came the kittens spitting and bristling up. Dad thought a dog was around and looked out the door and there stood a bear. There was only one door to their house. So Dad steped back and slamed the door shut in the face of the bear. The bear left and no harm came from the experience. Dad kept farming and launched out in the cattle business. He had to mortgage his place to buy the cattle. Things were going well until the winter of the big blizzard. It lasted several days and was so bad he could not get the feed to the cattle so most of the herd died. With the loss of the cattle he was not able to meet the mortgage payment and the place was lost. He continued farming by renting. Sometime a little later, before I was old enough to remember, he tryed buying another farm. This time there was a bad hail storm which destroyed the crop in fifteen minutes. When this happened he lost the entire crop. He was not able to meet the payment of the farm and he lost it. He continued renting and farmed until we left Wyoming.

"All five of us children were born in Wyoming. SENA born May 5, 1885, CURL September 18, 1890, CHARLES May 20, 1893, VELMA October 23, 1897 and HAZEL August 19, 1900. In the summer of 1903 another hailstorm destroyed the crops and our family decided to leave Wyoming and move to Princton, Idaho. Dad ran a farm there for awhile and when the farm was sold, we moved to Northeastern Washington in the Pend O'rellie Valley. This was 50 or 60 miles northeast of Spokane, Washington. This was the end of the road in those days. Very poor school opportunities and advantages for children. In 1910 Dad decided to leave the farm and he bought an acre in Greenacres, Washington in Spokane Valley just 12 miles East of Spokane. We moved in August and found Greenacres to be a very pleasant place. There were good school and church opportunities for all of us.

"Dad worked on a special job in the papermill for several years. As modern equipment was added, his special job was eliminated. He was offered any job he wanted if he would do shift work. He felt he was getting too old to take shift work there. He would have to work nights a third of the time and he did not want to leave mother alone at night. He was offered the job as custodian in the local grade school. He took that and worked there until he retired. He was in his early seventies when he retired. During the years after I left home, he sold half and acre that had the house on it and built a nice little two bedroom cottage. They lived happily after he retired even though pensions at that time were very small. He always had a good garden and by wise planning they got along fine. In 1941 cancer developed and Dad died on January 2, 1942.

"Mother was not able to live on the place alone so she sold the place and moved to Spokane and lived with Velma until her death June 28, 1953. When my oldest sister Sean died with the flu on December 18, 1918, Dad bought a large family lot at the Pines Cemetary in Opportunity, Washington. This is where my parents and sister are burried. As to the family, Curl is still living in Greenacres in the same house for 60 years. Velma and Hazel both live in Spokane. CHARLES became a minister and after service churches in North Idaho and Washington, he moved to Portland, Oregon in January 1931. He was pastor in Portland for 18 years then became the State Minister or Regional Minister for the Christian Churches [Disciples of Christ] in Oregon where he served for 12 years. He retired in July of 1960 after serving 40 years in the ministry. He and his wife Lola moved to Senior Estates in Woodburn, Oregon, January of 1963."
