The oldest son of John & Catherine (Shockar) Addleman was George, who was born on 27 Dec 1789 in Loudoun County, Virginia. He moved with his parents to Morgan Twp., Greene Co., Pennsylvania and later moved to Harrison County, Ohio.

" . . . GEORGE ADDLEMAN was a native of Virginia, and when a small boy, went with his parents to Greene County, Penn., where he grew to manhood, and married ELIZABETH PRONG, a native of that State. In 1820 George Addleman, with his wife, came to Harrison County, Ohio, and located on the farm in Monroe Township. . . . After a residence of five years on this farm, he and his wife returned to Pennsylvania [1825], where another period of five years was passed, when they again came to Harrison County, Ohio [1830], and located on a new farm. Mrs. Elizabeth Addleman died about the year 1850, and, later, Mr. Addleman married Mrs. ELIZABETH PRICE, widow of John Price. At the advanced age of nearly ninety-seven years, George Addleman passed away, January 30, 1886.

"JOHN ADDLEMAN [a son of George Addleman (1789-1886)], merchant, Bowerston, Harrison County, was born in Monroe Township, Harrison Co., Ohio, October 16, 1823. . . . John Addleman was reared, like all other pioneer boys, to hard work and physical endurance of toil. His home was in the wilderness, and many a fine drove of deer did he see roaming through the forest. In those primitive days the pioneer threshed his grain with the flail and by tramping it out with horses. The nearest market place to the Addlemans was Steubenville, Ohio, about forty miles distant, and, after hauling their threshed wheat to that point, they would sell it at twenty-five cents or thirty cents per bushel, but would have to pay exorbitant prices for any "store goods" they might bring back for family consumption. The educational facilities consisted of those furnished by the subscription schools, and those could be availed of only a few weeks in each winter; but in these, however, our subject laid the foundation of an education that was developed to the full, later in life. December 14, 1843, JOHN ADDLEMAN married Miss CHARITY M. JONES, who was born December 7, 1824, in Harrison County, Ohio, and whose parents, Henry and Amy Jones, were early pioneers of Nottingham Township, in the same county. In 1853 Mr. Addleman, with his wife, settled in Bowerston, then comprising a few dwelling-houses, one store and a blacksmith shop, and situated in the wilderness. Here Mr. Addleman, who had learned the trade of cabinet-making in his young manhood, to which he added carpentering, opened up in this line of business, and successfully conducted the same until 1870, when he established himself in the furniture business exclusively, which he still carries on. To "Mr. and Mrs. Addleman have been born nine children, of whom four are still living. Both parents are members of the Methodist episcopal Church, and in politics Mr. Addleman is a Republican, although he was originally a Democrat. For the past ten years he has served as treasurer of Monroe Township; he was elected treasurer of Bowerston at its incorporation, and has held the office ever since; he is a charter member and treasurer of Centennial Lodge No. 94, K. of P., at Bowerston, and a member of R. M. Lyon Post, No. 405, G. A. R., at Bowerston. In 1864 Mr. Addleman enlisted in Company B, One Hundred and Seventieth O. N. G., and took part in the engagements at Harper's Ferry, Winchester, Maryland Heights and other places, and was honorably discharged at Columbus.

"GEORGE W. ADDLEMAN, eldest son of [John Addleman (1823)], enlisted in Company A, One Hundred and Twenty-sixth O. V. I., and died in service, at Martinsburg, Va., April 18, 1863, at the age of eighteen years and nine months."

DAVID ADDLEMAN (1828), the second son of George Addleman, was born in Morgan Twp., Greene Co., Penn., and later married SUSANNA FIREBAUGH in Harrison Co., Ohio, on 24 Jan 1850. Susanna was the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Friend) Firebaugh, who lived in North Twp., Harrison Co., Ohio. John Firebaugh is reported to have been "drafted in the War of 1812." After raising thirteen children, Elizabeth died 19 Feb 1872 and John died "at the age of eighty-six years and ten days." David and Susanna Addleman raised ten children, who were born in Ohio, Iowa and Nebraska. David died on 22 Jan 1905 in Springfield, Sarpy Co., Nebraska. Susanna died on 22 Mar 1906 in Sarpy Co., Nebraska. They are both buried in Ball Cemetery.

Major researchers who investigated this line of the Addlemans were Evelyn M. Carter (Gretna, NE), Annie McBride Knapp (Springfield, NE) and Keith & Margie Addleman (La Grande, OR) and of course, Olive M. Parker who wrote the Garmire book.

"[ELIZABETH PRONG was raised on] Mr. [Christopher] PRONG's farm of one hundred forty seven acres, known as "Prong's Quarry" [and it] was on the line between Washington and Greene Counties, Pennsylvania. He was of German descent and signed his Will, made February 26, 1809, in German script, Stopfel Prong. Mr. Prong was a soldier in the American Revolution in Capt. Thomas Craig's Company in the 2nd Pennsylvania Battalion under the command of Col. Arthur St. Clair, Joseph Wood, Anthony Wayne and Gen. Gates in their campaign in the vicinity of Ticonderoga, New York (Pennsylvania Archives Series 5, Vol. 2, pages 93-96). He was a farmer by occupation. He died December 12, 1809, age 52 years and 10 months and is buried in the Horn Cemetery at Trinity Lutheran Church near Zollarsville, Pennsylvania. His widow married again, but to whom we have no record. His Will reveals the names of his ten children as follows: MARGARET, SUSANNAH, ANN (NANCY ANN), CATHERINE, SARAH, CHRISTINA, MARY, ELIZABETH, RACHEL and ULIAN (W. B. Vol. 2, page 201, Washington, Pennsylvania.). [Nancy Ann Prong (b 7 Nov 1786) married John Litzenberg (b 13 Jun 1786) on 14 Mar 1808 (Washington Co., PA). Evidently Elizabeth first married Samuel Braden.]"

"George Addleman (Green), an old and highly respected citizen of Monroe township, Harrison county, Ohio died on the 30th ult. aged 96 years one month and two days. Father Addleman was one of the early settlers of this township. He was born in "Loudon Co., Virginia, on the 27th day of December, 1789. At an early age he moved to Pennsylvania. In 1820 he moved to Ohio and in 1830 he settled upon the farm where he died. . . . Like many of our early pioneers he was a man of strong physical endowments and a man of strong convictions. But he was a man of a retiring disposition and loved his home and his family. All were welcome to his table. Hospitality to all was a strong trait in his character.

" . . . [He was a member of the United Brethren Church (Connotton.] The funeral discourse was preached by Rev. T. W. Anderson, of the M.E. Church, assisted by Rev. M. B. Gandy, of the U. B. Church, . . . The funeral services were held in the M.E. Church at Bowerston . . . The remains were followed to the Lutheran cemetery by a large circle of friends. . . .."

"John Addleman (Green) was born in Monroe township, Harrison county, Ohio October 16, 1823. Died at Cadiz, Ohio, Thursday, February 11, 1909, at 3:30 o'clock, from the infirmities of age, aged 85 years, 3 months, 26 days.

"Deceased was one of Harrison county's pioneers, his early days having been spent in the forest, which meant early training to hard labor, and while he had finished a longer career than is the lot of most men, his mental faculties remained undimmed to the last moment of his life. The educational facilities in the days of his youth being limited, he was compelled to depend upon a few weeks instruction each winter in the subscription schools, and from this limited opportunity he laid the foundation of a business education which was developed as time permitted in later years.

"December 14, 1843, John Addleman was married to Miss Charity M. Jones, who was born December 7, 1824, in Nottingham township, this county, and who preceeded him to the better land nine years, her death occurring at Bowerston on January 5th, 1900, aged 75 years. In 1853 they settled in Bowerston, Ohio. Having learned the carpenter and cabinet making trade, deceased followed this vocation until 1870 when he engaged in the furniture business, which he carried on successfully until the death of his life partner in 1900, when he sold out the business and came to Cadiz to make his home with his son, Charles G. Addleman,

"Mr. and Mrs. Addleman were members of the M. E. church at Bowerston, having embraced the christian religion early in life, and from that time on to the end had known no other master.

"The family consisted of nine children, three of whom are living: Charles, at Cadiz, Wesley and Frank at New Philadelphia. . . . Mr. Addleman was . . . a member of R. M. Lyon Post, G. A. R. . . . In politics he was a Republican. . . .On Saturday " morning the remains were taken to Bowerston . . .."

"BERTHA ADDLEMAN was born November 2, 1898 in Sarpy County, Nebraska, and died at the Lord Lister hospital in Omaha on June 2, 1923, at the age of 24 years and 7 months. She was united in marriage to GEORGE M. MERRILL, on July 2, 1919. To this union two children were born, EUGENE THOMAS aged 2 years, and NORMAN GEORGE aged 8 months who with the husband father and mother, one sister, Mrs FLORENCE WILSON, of Topeka, Kansas, and six brothers, CHARLES, ARTHUR, HARVEY, ERNEST, BERT, and THOMAS all of Gretna, are left to mourn [her] death besides a host of other relatives and friends. Burial was made in the Ball cemetery following a service at her home about six miles north of Springfield."

"After a few days illness, GEORGE W. MERRILL died in an Omaha hospital Sunday, September 26. Deceased had been working in a packing house in South Omaha and it is thought he exposed himself to a draft after becoming over-heated, and pneumonia developed which caused his death. The remains were brought to Springfield Tuesday afternoon and the funeral was held from the M. E. church under the auspices of the M. W. A. Camps of this place of which he was a member, the services being conducted by Rev. W. D. Stambaugh of Richfield. Burial was in the Ball Cemetery by the side of wife, who passed away June 2, 1923.

"George Walter Merrill was born October 24, 1894, and came to Nebraska in 1914. He was united in marriage to Miss BERTHA ADDLEMAN, July 2, 1919. To this union two sons were born, EUGENE THOMAS, age 5 years and NORMAN GEORGE, 3 years old. He leaves to mourn his death his two sons, his mother, Mrs. Harding of Omaha, two sisters, Mrs. Paul Hazen and Mrs. Ellen Copsey, of South Bend, two brothers Marion Merrill, of Crook, Colo., and Joseph Merrill, Omaha, one half-sister, four half-brothers, other relatives and hosts of friends.

"George W. Merrill was a private in the World war. He was in Camp Funston in Company B. 355th Infantry from September 18, 1916, to February 28, 1918, at which time he was trnsferred to Company D. 4th Infantry in France. He was both gassed and wounded while in action. He was discharged in May 1919. The casket was draped with Old Glory in honor of services of "deceased to his country."

"I have just returned from our Addleman Reunion. I intended to send you an invitation but time got away from me. So this is an invitation to next years. Our reunion will be held the 3rd Sunday (I don't know the day number because I can't find a 1990 calendar.) in Sept., 1990 in the Senior Citizen's Hall in Louisville, Nebr. We would enjoy visiting with you. We bring a picnic lunch and eat about noon and spend the afternoon visiting. This year we had 40 members present. My dad was the oldest, Herman McBride, was 85 yrs old and the youngest was almost 4 mo. old. Orville Henry was from Kansas and the rest were from right around here. . . . I hope you get more info on our JOHN ADDLEMAN's (1769) parents. . . ."
