CENTRAL OH

The ADDLEMANs, GARMIREs and SHIDLERs were six children of John Addleman (1769) and Catherine (Shockar) Addleman who later moved to Central Ohio: Sarah Garmire (1796), Elizabeth Shidler (1800), Catherine Garmire (1805), Jacob Addleman (1805), Eve Shaffer (ca 1808) and Adam Addleman (1809). Their uncle and John's (1769) older brother, Philip Addleman (ca 1764), migrated to Hellier Twp., Knox County, Ohio, with his family in circa 1830 (reference Chapter 16). By looking at a map, one can see the central Ohio counties (Harrison. Tuscarawas, Holmes, Ashland and Knox) where these Addleman descendants migrated are directly westward from Greene County, Penn. It can also be seen that many of these early Ohio pioneers followed the known migration routes of the time.

"The Shidler family is another early pioneer family that eventually settled in Southwestern Penn. The following is interesting because it reveals the classic migration patterns of the period, as well as showing how various presentations of similar historical information differs.

"Jacob Shidler, born near Reganstaut, Regensburg, "Kingdom of Bavaria, Germany, September 6, 1724, was a son of Gotleib Shidler, a farmer in Remsburg. Jacob Shidler went to Merseburg, Germany, in 1746, where he married in 1748. In 1751, he came to Philadelphia, and in 1752 settled in Lancaster County, where he lived until 1767. In 1769, after two years in Baltimore, he removed to Northwest Virginia, and located in West Bethlehem Township, Washington County. He had four sons and three daughters: John, Jacob, William, George, Ann, Katharine, and Barbara. This German family soon adapted themselves to the frontier life of the Virginia settlers. They were known as "the religious German family" to the local settlers. Jacob Shidler died in Washington County in 1794. His wife died in 1799. The younger members emigrated to Ohio about 1803 [The Horn Papers, Vol. II, 1945: p. 498]."

"Jacob Shidler, the second son of Jacob Shidler, born in Lancaster County in 1752, tomahawked land near by [his older brother, John Shidler settled in Washington Co., 1 Aug 1786] in the same township in 1778, and under date of February 26, 1785, it was warranted to him and surveyed April 22, 1785, patented August 4, 1786. These sons of Jacob Shidler became permanent settlers in West Bethlehem Township, Washington County, where they lived the remainder of their lives. Two sons of John Shidler, Jacob, and John, Jr., removed to Ohio about 1810, where they settled near their uncles, George and William, who had located " there some years before [The Horn Papers, Vol. II, 1945: p. 563]."

"Another version of the Shidler family was compiled by Mrs. Elizabeth S. McCorkle, Ashland, Ohio, 1967. "Jacob Shidler, a Rev. War soldier, son of Jacob Shidler b in Hannau, Germany in 1710, to America 1730, possibly to Frederick Co. Md., where his wife Margaret Nave lived. Both d in PA. "ELIZABETH ADDLEMAN (b 1800, Greene Co., PA; d 31 Jan 1867, Perry Twp., Ashland Co., OH) married Daniel SHIDLER (1787-1864) ca 1819. Daniel is presumed to be the third son of Jacob and Katrina Shidler. There children were: (1) JACOB (b 23 Nov 1819; d 23 Oct 1866) married Rebecca WISE; (2) CATHERINE (b 28 Aug 1822) married Peter NEWCOMER; (3) WILLIAM (b 26 Jul 1824; d 23 Dec 1847); (4) HARTMAN HORN (b 13 Sep 1826; d 16 May 1907) married Susanna SHUTT; (5) JOHN (b 24 May 1828) married Sarah CASSEL; (6) Sarah; (7) CELIA married Frederick CASSEL.

"ADAM ADDLEMAN (b 1809, Morgan Twp., Greene Co., PA; d <1846) married Susannah SHIDLER (b 25 Jan 1811; d 3 Jun 1891) and had three children (Susannah's m-1; m-2 to David Gindlesberger): (1) JOHN S. (b 18 Feb 1835, OH; d 23 Feb 1916) married Mary M.; (2) WILLIAM (b 1838, d Congress Twp., OH) married Susan; (3) CATHERINE (b 1834, PA) married Lewis NEWCOMER 4 Nov 1851, Wayne Co., OH."

The single and most prominent genealogist/researcher for this chapter has to be Olive M. Parker, who later published her book in Wichita, Kansas, on the Garmire descendants. Most of this information would not have been as available without referencing her research.

1.2258 [CATHERINE M. GARMIRE-5 (1838), CATHERINE-4 (1805), JOHN-3 (1769), DANIEL-2, PHILIP ADDLEMAN-1] CATHERINE M. GARMIRE, b 25 Feb 1838 (Fulton Co., OH), d 2 May 1906 (near Hermitage, Hickory Co., MO), bur Gardner Cem; m WILLIAM FRANKLIN BRADLEY (b 6 Jul 1813 (SC), son of Ambrose & Hanna McCollum (CLEMENS) Bradley, O (Farmer, Carpenter), (his m1 to Rachael Matilda Ritchey), d 22 Sep 1876 (Hickory Co., MO), bur Gardner Cem) ca 1858.

"Mrs CATHERINE M. BRADLEY died at her home near Hermitage, Mo, May 2d, 1906. She was born in Fulton county, Ohio, Feb'y., 25, 1838. Was converted and joined the Baptist church and was baptised by Rev. T. D. Herbert in 1877 and lived a faithful christian life. In 1858 she was married to W. F. BRADLEY, who died in 1876. To this union seven children were born, 5 of whom survive her. They are J.E., O.L., and A. C., Bradley, Mrs. DELLA SELVIDGE and Mrs. NORA GARDNER, all of "whom were present at her death. The two children dead are Mrs. ARTANEY BURTON and Mrs. IDA HENSON. She also leaves 16 grand children and a host of friends to mourn her departure.

"She was a friend to the poor and was loved by her neighbors and all that loving and kind hands could do was of no avail. Her ailment was a complication of heart and stomach trouble and from the time she took sick she told loved ones it was her last sickness and before taking her bed had prepared with her own hands all the necessaries of her burial. She designated the place where she wished to be burried, arranged the distribution of her personal effects and requested, shortly before her demise, that she be allowed to tell all the children goodbye while she could recognize the. A prayer by her eldest son was offered. It was a beautiful scene mid sorrow and grief, tempered with the loving spirit of our Heavenly parent. It was three days later that the soul was released and she passed peacefully away without a struggle. She was buried at the Gardner graveyard near her deceased husband and two daughters. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. D. Herbert at her request. . . ."

(Apparently Eve (Addleman) Hedge didn't have any children. Jacob Hedge purchased a "white heffer" for 3.76 from the estate of John Addleman (1769) on 24 April 1828. This was probably Eve's husband. The 1850 U.S. Census in Centrebury, Hellier Twp, Knox Co., OH) listed the seven Shaffer children that were all from Philip Shaffer's first marriage. Past researchers and authors who have noted these Shaffer children as being Eve's, have been in error.)
