ROY H. ADDLEMAN OBITUARY
(Interment at Lund / Old Macksburg Cemetery)
Washington Co., OH
3. "ROY HOLLAND ADDLEMAN was born in Beaver Co., Pa., Feb. 10, 1895, died Jan. 2, 1914, age 18 yrs. 10 mo. 22 days. He was baptised when 5 years old in Scio M.E. church. He was son of Andrew P. and Josephine Addleman and grandson of Harvey Holland Adams. His father died about 3 years ago of Pneumonia in Wichita Co., Kan. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. G. W. Peters in Macksburg M.E. church. Interment in Lund cemetery. Pallbearers were chosen from Miss Mary G. Smithson's Sunday school class which Roy would have been a member of had he not been so sorely afflicted. The floral tribute from Sunday school was beautiful and consisted of roses, carnations and narcises. Roy was previous to his illness a great lover of books and a student far beyond his years as was proven by the many prizes, certificates, etc., awarded him. He was thoroughly good and always anxious to be in church and Sabbath school."His mother and one brother, Paul, are left lonely without him yet they are glad his sufferings are ended and are looking forward to the happy meeting in those mansions above where there is no sorrow nor saddness and where sickness and suffering can not enter. At Christmas time Roy was the recipient of many useful and beautiful presents and for this and the kindness and sympathy of friends and neighbors the mother and son are truly thankful and wish to express their appreciation to all. "Truly, the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart."
Paul Addleman returned to Ohio with his mother and brother to live with his grandfather, Harvey H. Adams.
Roy Addleman passed away at the age of 18 in Macksburg, Ohio (1914). He was reported to have died of a brain tumor. See the above obituary.
In 1926, Paul migrated with some friends to Riverside, Riverside Co., California. After establishing himself, he sent for his mother, Josie Adams Addleman.

"GEORGE McKEE, 69, of Caldwell, died 3 a.m. today (Jan. 14, 1984) at Guernsey Memorial Hospital. He was born May 14, 1915, in Maple Heights, son of CLAYTON (JUM) & EDNA ADAMS McKEE. He was a World War II Army veteran and retired Sohio bulk distributor of oil for over 25 years. He leaves two step-sons, ELVIN BROWN of Caldwell and DANA BROWN of Washington, Pa.; six step-grandchildren and three nephews; and friend and companion Vera Wells of the home. In addition to his wife, GRACE, who died Jun 16, 1975, one brother and two sisters preceded him in death. Friends may call Sunday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Mursphy Funeral Home in Caldwell, where services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday with Dr. John Arnold officiating. Burial will be in Olive Cemetery [provided by June Howell McKee]."
[Note-1: It was reported by family tradition that Edna's father was an assistant minister (possibly at Shafers M.E. Church), who promised to marry Josie Adams but later ran out on her when he found out she was pregnant. Consistent with the attitudes of the times, Harvey & Margaret Adams of Macksburg, OH, Josie's parents, raised Edna Adams as their own. Josie kept the 'family secret' but gradually began revealing the truth. It was fully revealed in her 1955 obituary.]
Note-2: At her grandmother's 1915 funeral in Macksburg, OH, other McKees were mentioned in the obituary: "George McKee & wife, Mrs. Joseph McKee, and Clayton (aka Jum) McKee and two children, Doris and Joseph, and Mrs. Melissa Retzer, all of Caldwell, Ohio." Also, excerpts from Jum McKee's obituary in the Caldwell Library, p. 41, was provided by Joan Debella.
Note-3: Edna's mother, Josie Adams Addleman, wrote to her continuously from Riverside, CA between 1926-55 and sent Xmas packages each year. Paul Addleman's (Edna's half-brother) children frequently were read letters from Aunt Edna in Caldwell, Ohio. (Edna's daughter, Kahryn, continued to write letters to the Addleman family after Josie passed away in 1955.)]

Dear Mary & all;
"Mother [EDNA ADAMS McKEE] passed away 2 weeks ago last night - Aug 7 at 11:35 p.m. She had a long happy life and was ready to go. We were at the ocean and we had a long trip home. I got to Zanesville at Good Samaritan Hospital at about 1 p.m., Wed. She knew me and I stayed there until she died. GEORGE was with me. She had not been well since the first of the year. She was 89+. Mother was the most beautiful person I have ever seen. She looked about 50 and I had her dressed so pretty. All her neighbors and friends felt very sad about her passing. Her mind was very alert. We are all very sad and our hearts are heavy, but she is in good hands. The most difficult task is going back to the house and disposing of all their belongings. She was so precious. I guess God knows best.
Well, I am going to be Grandma in January. SUZIE will teach until Thanksgiving and then have about 6 weeks until baby comes. GRACE was in the hospital when Mother passed away. She had cataracts removed and is doing fine. Mother had so many lovely flowers, donation to Library and to her church. I guess we are the old generation now! DUTCH has retired and he does much work around the house -- the yard, garden and fixing, painting, etc. We go a good bit and hope to travel.
JULIA BURT & 2 daughters were down to see Mother. She told me MARY BURT HARE is not well & is in The Nightingale Nursing Home in Cambridge, O. Sometimes her mind isn't too clear and one leg amputated. JACK ADAMS called me the other night and felt terrible about Mom. He loved her. Do you ever hear from them? The ADAMS' in [Jenks, Tulsa Co.,] Oklahoma. Aunt GRACE must be about 88. Keep in touch with them. I didn't call anyone far away. I had so much to do myself, I was a nervous wreck. My brothers didn't help me too much.
You would love Wash., D.C. and all the historical places one can see there - also Williamsburg, VA. Now that is some place! Aunt ADDIE and none of her family came. I also should write to PEARL SCHOONOVER in N.Y. . . . . We are all getting ready for our Library Fair in Sept. SUZ, JIM & I are making various things to sell at our table. SUZ is excellent at art.
I hope you have a great Fall and Winter - Stay well and happy. I must write to MAPLE.
Kathryn" [Mrs. Austin D. Studa, 26 Shady Ave., Burgettstown, PA 15021]
