1. Fischer, Claudia. Email, 30 Nov 2000. "I have a MATILDA ADAMS born 1809 in Ohio. She married DAVID POWELL (son of Barnabas Powell) about 1827, probably in Monroe County, Ohio. In the 1840 census of Belmont County, David Powell and his wife, Matilda Adams Powell, are living next door to JOHN ADAMS, Sr., and JOHN ADAMS, Jr. David and Matilda Powell had a son, GEORGE ALEXANDER POWELL, who married SARAH ANN ADAMS 24 Nov 1859, in Washington Co., OH. I believe that MATILDA may be another daughter of JOHN ADAMS SENIOR."

DISCUSSION

"In looking at the Census for 1820 Belmont County, I find the John Adams family as follows:

1 male under 10 (John Adams, Jr.?)

1 male 10-16 (Henry?)

1 male over 45 (John Sr.)

1 female under 10 (Matilda?)

2 females 10-16 (Catherine & Sarah?)

1 female 16-26 (Elizabeth?)

1 female over 45 (Mary)

Matilda's birth date has not been established. 1850 Census lists her as 41 (1809). 1860 Census she is 47 (1813). 1870 Census she is 58 (1812). To be under 10 in 1820, her birth date must be about 1811 or so which fits pretty well with the combined census information. Living next door to the John Adams family is George Adams: 1 male under 10, 1 male 16-26 and 1 female 16-26.

I also noticed that in the 1860 Census for Washington County, Independence Co, p.21B, Matilda Powell is #8/8 and listed as a widow farmer. #9/9 is her son George Alexander Powell and his wife Sarah Adams Powell. #10/10 is David Myer who is a Hand on Farm, #11/11 is Jacob Skinner age 58 and Catherine [Adams] Skinner age 52 and their children: Joseph 18, Rebecca 16, Isaac 12 and Sarah E. 7.

David and Matilda Powell were living in Belmont County in 1850. I believe that David was dead by 1857 but do not know if he died in Belmont or Washington County. By 1860, Matilda is living next to her sister, Catherine Skinner. Perhaps she moved there after the death of David."
